Math Placement Tests & Exemptions

Mathematics proficiency is a graduation requirement for the AAS degree at FIT. Placement into the proper math course will help you successfully master the skills needed to do well in all FIT majors. At FIT, placement is determined by:

  • SAT math exam 
  • ACT math exam

The following tables help determine placement.

SAT Math

If you score: You will register for:

520 and below

MA080 or MA081

Choose either one. See course descriptions for details. Bachelor's students see below.

530 or higher

MA142 or MA161 or MA222

ACT Math

If you score: You will register for:

22 or below

MA080 or MA081

Choose either one. See course descriptions for details. Bachelor's students see below as well.

23 or higher 

MA142 or MA161 or MA222

FIT Math Placement Exam 

The FIT math placement exam is an Accuplacer exam that consists of two sections:

  • Next Generation Arithmetic
  • Next Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics

Your score will be the sum of the two sections.

If you score: You will register for:
519 or below

MA080 or MA081

520 or higher

Bachelor of Science Majors in the School of Business & Technology

Bachelor of Science students in the School of Business and Technology who need math proficiency should take a section of MA080 that is designated as a MA080-COMPUTER-BASED section.

Other Possible Exemptions

  • a grade of C or better in college algebra, quantitative methods, pre-calculus, or calculus taken at another accredited college or university
  • passing grades in equivalent developmental math courses offered at another accredited college or university

International Students

Since you do not take the SAT or ACT exam, you will need to take the FIT math placement exam before registering for any math and science courses. See: International Students
